Living with periods

Often the novelty of starting a period soon wears off (see 'Starting periods') especially if you have heavy periods, pain, mood swings, night sweats, feeling bloated and/or sleeping problems

Sometimes symptoms are severe and last for several years . One young woman noticed that her symptoms became particularly acute when she felt stressed

Although some women are reassured by periods that show that their bodies are 'working properly', many are pleased if their contraceptive method makes their periods lighter

Mefenamic acid, the mini pill or the combined pill can make periods more regular and ease period pains.

One young woman was told by her GP that the contraceptive pill was to treat her period problems, and if she were to use it as a form of contraception she needed to go back for further information and instructions . Another did not know that girls can get pregnant even if they don't have a period every month .

Some women have regular periods, every four weeks or so, with no significant discomfort or mood swings. They usually consider themselves lucky , although some compare themselves with their friends and worry that light, regular periods may be unusual .
